Consultations: Much of our work is multidisciplinary approach, working with teachers, administrators and counselors to maximize students’ opportunities.
Health Screening: Our health team sees each student in the 4-county area in grades K-12, checking height, weight, BMI, vision, and hearing; all with appropriate referrals and rechecks.
Immunization Monitoring: We follow state laws for required immunizations for all students entering Nebraska schools, and assist in assuring compliance through vaccinations or waivers.
First Aid and Medication Administration: The health rooms are often busy. We provide direct first aid to many each day. We also administer parent-authorized medications if needed at school.
Communicable Disease Control: We provide assessment of student and staff illnesses and referrals to health care providers. We work closely with the NHHS for epidemic preparedness and the latest health-related trends. We also research community health topics and are involved in public education.
Responding to Medical Emergencies: We respond to emergencies such as allergic reactions, asthma incidents, sudden illnesses, seizures, injuries, and provide frontline care.
Health Education: Staff training is a very important part of the school nurses job. We instruct on topics for all staff such as Bloodborne Pathogens, Medication Administrations, CPR, First Aid, and specialized topics for selected staff such as Special Ed. student needs, or a great variety of classroom topics as requested by teachers. Some of these include W.A.I.T., Red Flag/Green Flag, eating disorders, blood typing, CPR, puberty, hygiene, alcohol/drugs, and many others.
Management of Chronic Health Conditions: We develop Health Care Plans for the management of diabetes, asthma, severe allergies, seizure disorders, or multiple complex medical problems that often require daily specialized nursing care. We provide professional care for these students and train staff as appropriate and necessary.
All students in grades K-12 need proof of the following immunizations on file when school starts.
Please note that in addition to the immunization requirements, all Kindergarten and out-of-state transfer students are required to provide proof of an eye examination by an eye physician or optometrist WITHIN THE PREVIOUS 6 MONTHS of school entrance.
